What the Heck is a Windows Registry?

Think of the Windows registry as a huge filing cabinet that stores critical information about your computer's hardware, operating system and your favourite software. For example, when you install a program, "keys" and "values" are written to a database.

The Windows registry is hidden from view and there is a very good reason for this! It's a complex maze of information that you shouldn't even think about tampering with. Do so and your computer might crash and burn!

What Causes a Registry Error?

Over a period of time, the registry on your computer grows and becomes bloated as you add or remove hardware and software. This can lead to corruption. Other causes include:

  • Viruses and spyware - they attach themselves to the Windows registry and are almost impossible to get rid of manually
  • Uninstalled applications - If a piece of software isn't uninstalled properly it can leave stray bits registry entries that cause problems for your computer when it starts up

Types of Registry Errors

The following are some very common types of Windows registry errors:

  • blue screen registry error or as it is aptly called the "blue screen of death"! This one is a common problem affecting millions of Windows users who have a corrupt system registry. Without any warning your computer screen suddenly turns blue and is filled with a lot of gibberish. Not pretty!
  • Dll errors - this is a specific file type (i.e. system.dll) that helps executable files (program.exe) run. If such a file is missing you will receive a registry error warning message
  • Registry start-up errors - These are very common and happen when a start-up item is not properly configured or is actually missing

Computer Registry Errors - The Side-Effects!

The effects of registry errors on you computer aren't pretty.  Your system will eventually slow down in a lot of ways.  Start-up might take more time than usual and perhaps when you try to open your favourite piece of software, clicking on the icon doesn't do anything.

Your computer may crash more often, freeze up or worse, not boot up at all!
